Montreal is a metropolis within the Canadian province of Quebec. In addition to being an incredibly vibrant and fun city to visit, it is also a center of commerce, food, gaming, and culture.
Montreal, the largest city within the Canadian province of Quebec, is home to the tallest leaning structure in the world (the Montreal Tower), the Space for Life museum district, and delicious food (many of them drawing inspiration from French cuisine).
It also has grand churches, plenty of nature, great museums, one of the best botanical gardens I’ve seen anywhere, an underground city, great nightlife, and even the random Ferris Wheel, among others. There’s simply so much going on in this city. And it’s in an excellent location—geographically centered between cities such as Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City, and New York City—so you can always venture out of the city toward other interesting destinations.

Flights / Getting There: Since Montreal is a major city, you can simply fly into it. Driving from New York or Toronto is a popular alternative as well.
Climate: Montreal’s climate intuitively follows the normal pattern of North America. There is one distinction: winters (December, January, February) are colder (subzero commonly) and summers (June, July, August) are less warm compared to the other Canadian cities.
Communication: French—the most widely spoken language in Montreal—and English are the official languages.
Navigation: The metro is a quick, intuitive, and easy way to explore Montreal. Simply follow the metro line of the appropriate color. For example, if you wish to visit Parc Jean-Drapeau to see the Biosphere, then you will travel on the yellow line.
Montreal also has an underground city. Use it during the colder seasons. Most attractions have maps of the Underground City. McGill station has the most information about the underground city.
Lodging: Lodging, in general, is moderately expensive (with the exception of hostels). Fortunately, Montreal is still quite a bit less expensive than Toronto. M Montreal is a great hostel in a relatively central location.
Activities Planning: Many attractions (i.e. planetarium, botanical garden, Biodome, the Tower, etc.) offer discounted package deals. To reduce costs, plan ahead and buy tickets for multiple attractions.
Special Considerations
General: Many of Montreal’s attractions give student discounts, so student IDs help tremendously when it comes to reducing attraction costs.
Peak Seasons: Summer is definitely the peak season.
Currency: Canadian Dollars (CAD). Currency Converter.
Many attractions (museums, planetarium, botanical garden, etc.) are closed on Monday. As previously mentioned, many attractions offer packaged deals that greatly reduce costs. While websites are provided, it is not mandatory to buy tickets online.
The Space for Life museum district unites the city’s four most prominent museums (Montreal Botanical Garden, Montreal Insectarium, Montreal Biodome, and Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium). The Montreal Tower is also in this area. If you want to see as much as possible without heavy reliance on transportation, then this district should be a priority.
Parc (Park) Maisonneuve: This urban park—named in honor of Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve, founder of Montreal—is a quiet sanctuary from the rest of the city. Due to its size and looping paved road, it is ideal for walking, jogging, and bicycling.
The Montreal Insectarium (closed for renovations during my visit to Montreal) is at the southeast corner of the park.
Cost: Free to visit. Recommended Duration of Visit: 30 – 60 minutes.
Montreal Botanical Garden: This massive botanical garden is one of the best gardens I’ve ever seen anywhere. Centered around various themes (Japanese, First Nations, Chinese, etc.), this garden showcases elaborate and colorful displays—all with breathtaking results. In addition to the displays, there are gift shops, a library, restaurants, and greenhouses, among others. Moreover, due to its collection and facilities, it is considered one of the most important botanical gardens in the world.
From September through October, there is a Garden of Lights event. At night, various themed gardens are lit up in a brilliant display of striking colors. If you refer to my Montreal Botanical Garden Guide, then you will see how truly amazing this place is.

The Friends of the Botanical Garden: Located at the base of the Botanical Garden, this building contains small exbibits and is a good source of information about the garden. It is mostly an area focused on the caretakers and supporters of the Botanical Garden.
Even though the surrounding area is gorgeous and elaborate, this place is easily missed.
Cost: If you are a member, then you have unlimited access to the garden. You can find more information here. Recommended Duration of Visit: 10 – 15 minutes.
Montreal Biodome: The Biodome, located within Olympic Park, was formerly a cycling stadium for the 1976 Summer Olympics. In its current form, the Biodome features exhibits of four ecosystems found in the Americas.
The exhibits are The Tropical Forest (modeled after the South American rainforest), Laurentian Forest (modeled after the North American wilderness), Saint Lawrence Marine Ecosystem (modeled after the Gulf of Saint Lawrence), and Sub-Polar Region (modeled after the Arctic and Antarctic). There are various animals in each specific ecosystem as well.

Rio Tinto Alcan Planetarium: This museum offers many interactive exhibits (for children and adults) on space and astronomy, two movie theaters, and real meteorite samples that you can touch. Overall, the collection of information on space and astronomy is comprehensive—encompassing dinosaurs, humans, geology, and the entire universe.
My favorite exhibit (and one often overlooked) is a rock that is over 3 billion years old. I don’t know how they got it, but it’s incredible.

The Montreal Tower: At 541 feet (165 meters) and leaning at 45 degrees, the Montreal Tower is the tallest inclined tower in the world. Visitors will take a 2-minute glass-encased funicular to the top.
At the top of this architectural masterpiece, the Observation Deck provides panoramic views of Montreal.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory: Southwest of Montreal’s Mont (Mount) Royal lies Saint Joseph’s Oratory—a Roman Catholic minor basilica. It is Canada’s largest church and one of the largest churches in the world.
In addition to the massive halls, it also has a gift shop, a restaurant, a small museum, a garden, a crypt, and a great view of Montreal. If you refer to my Saint Joseph’s Oratory Guide, then you will see how truly amazing this place is.
Cost: Free to visit, but donations are appreciated. Recommended Duration of Visit: 2 – 3 hours.
Mount Royal: In the 16th century, réal is a variant of royal. Therefore, the name Montreal (Mont + Réal = Montreal) is derived from Mount Royal—a small mountain within the city itself.
Featuring gorgeous nature, breathtaking panoramic views, and a plethora of unique sights scattered throughout, this mountain is monumentally important, beautiful, and fun.
Cost: Free to visit. Recommended Duration of Visit: 2 – 3 hours.
| This church is one of the farthest attractions from Montreal’s center, so having a car would help tremendously. Despite being quite remarkable in its own right, the interior is not as elaborate as that of the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal. And, in my opinion, the museum within is underwhelming and passable. |
| Since Saint Joseph's Oratory is southwest of Mount Royal, planning to visit both within the same day would be ideal. That way, you only have to make one trip in order to visit two amazing destinations. The Mount Royal parking lot is about an 8-minute walk from the Mount Royal Chalet—a place with a great view. |
Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal: As a masterpiece of Gothic Revival architecture, this church, located within Old Port of Montreal, features vibrant stained glass, intricate carvings, and elaborate statues, among others.
Due to its beauty and importance, it is one of the most visited monuments in North America. If you refer to my Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal Guide, then you will see how truly amazing this place is.
Cost: $10 CAD to enter. Recommended Duration of Visit: 30 – 60 minutes.
Old Port: Old Port is the historic port in Montreal. Its origins date back to the 1600s when it was a trading post (hence the “old” part). As a major recreational area, its highlights are a giant Ferris wheel, shops, churches, bars, clubs, and restaurants, among others.
Cost: Variable depending on activity. Recommended Duration of Visit: 1 – 3 hours.

| Old Port is a relatively large area. If you are unsure which part would interest you most, simply head toward the water—in the direction of La Grande Roue (i.e. the giant Ferris wheel). |
La Grande Roue (the Big Wheel): La Grande Roue lies in Montreal’s Old Port. Since it opened to the public in September of 2017, it’s a newcomer compared to Montreal’s other major attractions.
Overall, this Ferris wheel is a fantastic way to end your day and enjoy a great view. In fact, the photo at the top of this page was taken from the top of La Grande Roue. The highest elevation is at 197 feet (60 meters).

Biosphere Environmental Museum: This environmental museum, located on Saint Helen’s Island, was the former United States’ pavilion for the 1967 World Fair. It has about a dozen interactive exhibits focusing on current and future environmental issues (air, water, sustainable development, climate change, etc.).
Cost: You can find more information and buy tickets on the Biosphere Environmental Museum page. Admission is free for anyone 17 and under. Recommended Duration of Visit: 1 – 2 hours.

My ride also stopped half way on the 4th rotation while people got on. Don’t worry; they won't forget you. I also don't recommend the restaurant there. It’s basically a mediocre tourist trap. |

Parc (Park) La Fontaine: This popular urban park has a community center, fountains, small waterfalls, swimming pools, baseball fields, tennis courts, and volleyball courts, among others.
It also has a weird giant slingshot—creatively named Le Slingshot. Due to its size and picturesque landscape, this park is a very nice place for a relaxing nap, stroll, or le pique nique (i.e. French word for picnic).

Jean-Talon Market: This farmers market, located in the Little Italy district, is the largest open-air market in North America. It features many shops within a vibrant and festive atmosphere.
The food options are overwhelming (in a good way), and the energy is contagious. Overall, it is a fantastic and fun place to visit and eat.

Tyrolienne MTL Zipline
The Tyrolienne MTL Zipline faces La Grande Roue in Old Port. Dubbed “the coolest activity in Old Port,” the zipline crosses the water and runs past La Grande Roue. There are two activities to choose from:
1) Quick Jump: Falling 80 feet (24 meters) from the top of the tower
2) Zipline: Flying 1200 feet (366 meters) over Bonsecours Island (where La Grande Roue is).

Nearby, you can rent various paddle boats and just cruise on the water.

I find myself visiting Montreal on numerous occasions. The city is so much fun, and there is so much to see and do. Furthermore, it is within a comfortable distance from Ottawa, Toronto, Quebec City, and New York City. So, even if you tire of Montreal, there are plenty of other nearby cities to visit. Overall, Montreal is an incredible city and one I highly recommend you visit if you’re ever curious about this part of the world.
