Visiting Red Butte Garden:
Things to See and Do

Red Butte Garden is a photogenic paradise within the heart of nature, featuring an amphitheater, a four seasons garden, a rose garden, and a conservation garden, among others. It is also one of the most educational gardens I’ve ever visited. Alongside descriptions, there are history lessons and instructions for creating your own beautiful garden.

With nature in its backyard, the garden also contains hiking trails that span for miles. It is one of my favorite gardens in the United States (and the world, honestly). And yes, I’m aware it has a weird-ass name.

In this guide, I’ll show you some beautiful photos and great things to see when visiting Red Butte Garden.

Salt Lake City: The Salt Lake City Adventure Guide provides more helpful and interesting information about the wonderful yet underrated capital of Utah (the city in which Red Butte Garden resides).

Red Butte Garden: Important Information
Dimensions Red Butte Garden spans an area of .15 mi2 (.4 km2).
Duration The recommended duration of visit is 2 – 4 hours. There are over 5 miles of hiking trails, so this could be a short or long visit based on your goals.
Best Time If you intend to go hiking, the best time to visit is in the morning. It can get quite hot around noon onward.
Cost For more information, refer to the official Red Butte Garden website.
Parking There is plenty of parking right next to the garden.
Special Considerations: A map will greatly aid you in Red Butte Garden. With its assortment of hiking trails, navigation can be very difficult without a proper map for guidance. There are marked locations for water fountains to keep you hydrated. Remarkably, the benches are also marked on the map.

Four Seasons Garden

This garden incorporates various seasonal plant life throughout the four seasons of the year. The texture, fruit, foliage, and flowers featured here all contribute to this garden’s celebration of the four seasons.

Seepy Hollow Trail

Of the miles of sprawling trails throughout Red Butte Garden, Seepy Hollow Trail is arguably the best. Located directly behind the Four Seasons Garden, it is the first and closest trail to the Visitor Center.

Not only does the trail connect to other scenic trails, but it also leads up to a historic abandoned Quarry House at an elevation of 5330 feet (1625 meters).

And while the Quarry house is where Seepy Hollow Trail ends, the hike can continue via a multitude of nearby connected trails.

Rose Garden

As perhaps the most popular of all flowers, the rose symbolizes affection, passion, and loyalty. Luckily, the Rose Garden contains over 70 different species of roses.

Remarkably, the Rose family (Rosacea) has contributed more types of fruit to the human diet than any other plant family. Some notable fruits include apples, pears, peaches, cherries, plums, raspberries, strawberries, and even almonds, among others.

For example, a conventional rose belongs to the Rosa genus, strawberries belong to the Fragaria genus, apples belong to the Malus genus, pears belong to the Pyrus genus, and almonds belong to the Prunus genus.

Water Pavillion Garden

Almost all bodies of water in Red Butte Garden resides within the Water Pavillion Garden. This region is perhaps the most relaxing part of Red Butte Garden because the pavilion and trees provide much-needed shade, and the scenery is simply serene.

The Water Pavillion Garden is also right next to the Rose Garden.

Water Conservation Garden

The Water Conservation Garden focuses on beautiful water-conserving plants. It is also my favorite garden in Red Butte Garden. With its terrace layout, the garden is fun to explore, photogenic, massive, and diverse.

Throughout the garden, there are various educational information boards that show you how to grow your own “water-wise” plants that are just as beautiful as their more water-hungry counterparts.

The bulk of this garden has no shade, but there are pavilions and water fountains scattered throughout.

Despite highlighting some of the best attractions in Red Butte Garden, the photos are but a small sample of all the wonderful things to see. If you are ever in the mood for some splendid gardens and scenic hikes, then a journey through Red Butte Garden will ease the mind and calm the spirit.
